Founded in 2020 by visionary eXtrepreneur Jainul Abedin, Abyom SpaceTech & Defence has rapidly
emerged as one of India’s fastest-growing space technology companies. The name ‘Abyom’ is
derived from the phrase ‘Above and Beyond Vyom’, with Vyom meaning ‘sky’ or ‘space’ in Sanskrit,
reflecting the company’s ambitious mission to unlock a wide spectrum of space-related possibilities
while making outer space more accessible, valuable, and environmentally sustainable.
Abyom is focused on developing Reusable Rockets and advancing as a full-stack space engineering
company, delivering solutions across space infrastructure and dual-use Defence technologies. With
a strong commitment to indigenous innovation, the company aims to contribute to India’s
emergence as a global leader in affordable, reusable, and reliable space launch infrastructure. By
enabling multi-launch capabilities, Abyom is working to transform the economics and accessibility
of Space and Defence exploration.
Beyond engineering excellence, the company has also demonstrated a deep commitment to
capacity-building and knowledge sharing. In 2021 and 2022, Abyom trained over 3,500 students in
space technology and contributed to academic research through 25+ Research publications on
various SpaceTech subsystems, contributing to the growth of India’s broader space innovation
ecosystem.
In 2023, Abyom secured pre-seed funding and successfully developed a mobile rocket engine testing
facility, allowing for flexible and scalable engine validation. Further, 2024 marked a year of major
technical breakthroughs. The company validated the performance of its pintle injector, tested a
2.5kN bi-propellant liquid engine, and upgraded its test facility for higher capacity tests. Most
notably, Abyom established one of the first commercial plug-and-play rocket test facilities in Asia,
marking a significant achievement, and signed several academic MoUs to further expand its R&D
infrastructure.
In 2024, it was selected for the Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) cohort, becoming the only Indian
launch vehicle company to be included. The same year, Abyom emerged as the winner of the Boeing
BUILD 2024 competition and was recognized as a DGEMS 2024 Select 200 company, validating its
global business potential. Abyom is backed and funded by leading institutions such as the
Department of Science and Technology (DST), Family Office Fund, Ministry of Electronics and
Information Technology (MeitY), PIEDS BITS Pilani, GUSEC, Government of Uttar Pradesh, Boeing,
and others.
The momentum continued in 2025, with Founder & CEO, Jainul Abedin being honoured with Forbes
30 Under 30 – Asia and the Karamveer Chakra Award for his notable contributions to the Aerospace
industry. Driven by a bold vision to make space exploration more sustainable, cost-effective, and
accessible, Abyom’s RLV and dual-use technologies stand focused to revolutionize the global space
sector. With its growing technological capabilities, ecosystem partnerships, and strategic foresight,
Abyom is set to shape a new path for India in the global space industry.
